Judges' Comments

Peter Forrestal

A very good wine. Wild berries, juicy, briary characters. Some dark berries. A very dense wine with rich, concentrated flavours and power. Huge tannins but not unapproachable. Quite ripe and fine. The food enveloped the tannins. It calmed and swamped them almost. The two of them balanced each other nicely.

Maurizio Gily

Delightful young Nebbiolo characters at the nose. Strawberry in the mouth. Well integrated acidity. Medium length. The tough tannins, even if ripened, are a character of this variety. Superb match with the food.

Patrick Farrell

Nice, floral, berry, earthy aromas and flavours. There was very good acidity and balance. The wine was even more attractive with food and showed integrated oak and classic Nebbiolo notes of roses and tar. The tannins seemed much more noble with the food.

Lynnette Hudson

Raspberry spectrum. Spicy cedar. Vibrant fruit. Lots of oak, giving quite drying tannins. It seems more tight and tannic with the food. Not such a good match.

Ken Dobler

Dark cherry in colour. The nose showing some meat extract and some red fruit characters. The palate showing lovely cherry and spice. Good length. The food tended to overpower the wine. This more savoury style of wine would probably suit a less unctuous dish.

Cathy van Zyl

Vibrant, fresh and sour cherry nose with whiffs of spice, very firm tannins and sour cherry acidity. Kind of morello like. Savoury. The tannins might be too big for some but others might find them balanced. The only disconcerting fact about this wine was that if finished a little bit warm. With the food, the alcohol cleaned the palate. The savouriness was a good contrast with the sweet lamb.

Stephen Harris

Light blueberry nose with a little bit of a rubbery character in a good way. A subtle, savoury wine with sweet fruit edges. The wine looked very hard with the dish. It didn’t marry up too well with the lamb.
