Judges' Comments

PETER FORRESTAL

Quite restrained on the nose but supple, almost a silky mouth feel. The tannins were manageable. Very attractive in the mid palate. Some plum and cassis flavours with food. Quite gentle on the finish and long.

BRENT MARRIS

Very fresh, vibrant nose. Slight gaminess coming through. Rich fruit on the palate. Lovely balance. That gaminess comes through to the finish. Wonderful tannin structure. It worked well with the pie. Lovely front sweetness. It was very lifted and the tannins were great.

GERHARD ZIEMER

Juicy, spicy plum and redcurrant fruit flavours. A good fruity mid palate. Very soft, mealy tannins. Quite a lush mouthful. The elegant richness remains with the kangaroo pie. The fruits charm and the purity remains. Light chocolate toffee notes evolve into a soft mealy texture. A lovely wine.

KEN GARGETT

Some slightly rural herbal notes here. Dark berry. There are some smoky tones. Nice soft tannins. Some spiritous black cherry flavours. It’s a very attractive style and it does have attractive length. The richness and the complexity of both wine and rabbit work very well together.

IVAN DONALDSON

This wine had sweet fruit with raspberry overtones. Good integration with the oak, but it is a little short in the length. The food totally overpowered this wine.

GHISLAIN LAFLAMME

Good fruity nose. Raspberry, blackberries. Soft tannins. The match is not a successful one with the food. Each component keeps its position. No-one helps the other.

RODNEY KEMP

Sweet blueberry, blackberry nose. Some clean fruit intensity. The palate was sweet. Clean berry fruit dominated. Great concentration of flavour. A more delicate structured style.

PAM DUNSFORD

Young, soft oak and fruit tannins. Lots of chocolate. Wine with food shows spicy berry fruit. Quite different flavours coalesce. The food loses. The wine wins because its youth is tamed.

HUON HOOKE

A very scented, aromatic, slight aroma. Palate is light bodied and a bit on the weak side. This wine is a bit short and a bit light especially with the food. Still, quite acceptable although a bit out of class here.

ANGELA LLOYD

Well composed, spicy aromas with balanced oak. Good palate texture but a rather short finish. However the fruit style is not too overt and it goes well with the food.

MARGARET HARVEY

Rich, ripe, black cherry nose. Light, tannic structure. Delicate cherry and damson fruit notes. Medium weight in the mouth. Wine lifted by the food and carried well. Cherry notes still evident at the end. Finishes clean.

PAUL WHITE

Big, raspberry, stewy, soft, sappy wine with vanilla sweetness on the finish. Soft, round, simple wine dwarfed by the complex game.
