Judges' Comments

MARGARET HARVEY

Sweet, cedary, cherry and cassis notes on the nose. Follows through onto the palate. Lovely concentration of rich raspberry fruit. Good tannic structure. The cedary notes and the cherry notes are still evident and go well with the food. The tannins are somewhat reduced, but a good combination.

ANGELA LLOYD

Big fleshy, savoury wine. Nicely harmonised. Full bodied and vinous with a long savoury finish. A good food style. It makes a good match because of the structure and the lack of overt fruit.

KEN GARGETT

There’s some spice here. Just a hint of road tar. Black olives and some herbal characters. It’s reasonably complex and there is a backing of oak. The fruit, the acid and the oak tannins are all in balance and help make this an attractive match. That little extra complexity in the wine does assist.

IVAN DONALDSON

Blackberry, raspberry, plum flavours. Very even palate structure. A big wine with robust tannins but no bitterness. I felt it needed time to show at its best. However the tannins in this wine seemed to totally dominate the food.

PETER FORRESTAL

Lovely plummy flavours. A succulent, almost velvety texture. Some red berry and cedary oak characters in balance. An attractive finish with some, but not too much oak. It was very good with food. Just a trace of tannin on the finish. Give this a little bit of time and I think it would be a terrific food wine.

GHISLAIN LAFLAMME

Robust wine with heavy tannins. A promise of fruit. The heavy tannins are a problem for the dish.

RODNEY KEMP

Chocolaty, ripe berries. Nose very appealing. Palate slightly acidic and a touch awkward with the food.

BRENT MARRIS

Ripe, complex characters. Slight leatheriness. Quite tannic. Some brambly berry characters. Drying tannins. The complexity remained on the palate with the dish. Tannins less obvious but still a leathery finish.

PAUL WHITE

Brambly, blackberry, liquorice, edgy nose. Big fruit. Chunky wine. Okay against the roo but a bit sweet on the finish. Lacks cleansing acidity.

PAM DUNSFORD

A big, rich, developed wine with some age, some older style integration. It fights the food. Not a good match.

HUON HOOKE

A bit of volatility. It was a bit harsh and astringent on the nose and the palate. Unbalanced. It lacked fruit. A trace of VA on the palate too unfortunately.

GERHARD ZIEMER

The pure, focused, red cherry, cassis flavours harbour great intensity but they end with grippy tannins that shorten the finish. Still ripe and very promising with the pie. The tannins do become grippy and edgy, and it shortened the finish alarmingly.
