Judges' Comments

GERHARD ZIEMER

Shows interwoven black cherry and cassis flavours with prune like plum notes. Extremely ripe fruit went into this wine. Chewy, dusty tannins emerge at the end but there are also notes of liquorice. This wine maintains its purity in size. Becomes a bit more approachable with the pie. This is an awesome powerhouse wine.

PAUL WHITE

Fruity, dried red cherry characters. Quite round and smooth in the mouth with red fruit softness. Nice cleansing acidity. Restrained tannins. A good match.

BRENT MARRIS

Medium intensity on the nose. Quite a short palate. Lacked fruit on the finish. Quite tannic. The fruit was dominated by the dish and the tannins were strong.

KEN GARGETT

Coffee beans, chocolate. It’s a full, rich style with some fruit cake hints and soft tannins. Some black cherry flavours. The flavours went reasonably well together but no great highlights.

IVAN DONALDSON

Subdued fruit. Big tannins and rather drying. Seemed a bit disjointed at present but with time, it should come into balance.

PETER FORRESTAL

Some nice redcurrant and spice aromas. Velvety texture and some plummy characters there too. The oak was in balance and the tannins were quite ripe. It worked well with food. There was a fleshiness in the mid palate. The flavours seemed to be emphasised. The only negative was that, although the finish was good, there was that tannin whack right at the finish, which could be a bit of a problem.

GHISLAIN LAFLAMME

This wine lacks a little structure. The food dilutes it and makes it disappear. Not a good match.

RODNEY KEMP

Pepper and strong, ripe berry characters. The palate was inky but fell away with the food.

MARGARET HARVEY

Hint stalky. Cherry and damson fruit on the nose. Good concentration of fruit flavours and nice, ripe tannins. Some oaky notes coming through as well. Light, slightly stalky fruit notes come out. Wine too light for the food.

PAM DUNSFORD

Enhanced aromatics. Fine wine beneath. The wine stands alone with the food.

HUON HOOKE

Blackcurrant, leafy, cool area or cool vintage Cabernet characters here. It’s verging on greenness. The palate is quite elegant. No green tannins here. It goes surprisingly well with the food. A nice, full bodied style of Cabernet dominant flavours. Firm on the finish but quite sympathetic with the kangaroo dish.

ANGELA LLOYD

Strong cedary oak. Fruit nicely balanced. The palate lacks richness and falls away leaving rather rough tannins. The food emphasises these tannins. Not a good match.
