A food-wine matching
banquet made in heaven
Sydney
International Wine Competition Awards Degustation Banquet Saturday, 8 March
2014
The Awards & Trophies Presentation Banquet of the Sydney International
Wine Competition will be held in Sydney on Saturday, 8 March, offering one
of the finest examples of food-wine matching in Australia.
The Banquet, held in the
Grand Ballroom of the Shangri-La Sydney between 12 noon – 4pm presents a seven course dégustation
menu, with each course complemented by the three highest pointed wines from the
relevant Style Category, including the trophy winner and the two runners-up.
The
dishes are selected specifically to match the style of wines in an ultimate
demonstration that a wine’s
style is more important in wine/food matching than its grape variety, age,
label or price.
The 200+ Blue-Gold winners will be available for
tasting before and during the banquet or in separate tasting sessions at the
Menzies Hotel on Saturday 22 March.
The trophy winners and Blue-Gold winners were
selected from 2000 wines submitted for judging. Wines that make the cut in the SIWC are
double tasted – initially on their own, but then with food. This way, the wines
are judged according to the way most consumers drink wine – with food.
“Every year, for the past eight years, Shangri-La
has offered us a banquet of the highest quality,” says Sydney International
Wine Competition convenor Warren Mason. “Our banquet is open to all
wine-lovers, who appreciate having the time, the fine food and ambience to
appreciate wine at its best.
“This year, we are fortunate enough to have the
legendary Ross Brown present the keynote address. Brown Brothers has been one
of the pillars of the industry over the past 50 years and he will share his
insights about his own career in the industry, as well as how he sees the
industry developing in the future.” Mr Mason said that in addition to the 13 Style Category Trophies, a
further 11 specialised trophies will be presented during the banquet,
recognising the best wines of the Competition.
Tickets for the Banquet are
available for $275 per person, with an early bird option of 20% discount for
bookings made prior to 31 January.
The Exhibition of the 2014 TOP 1OO/Blue-Gold Award Winners is being held on Saturday 22 March at the Menzies Hotel. There are two
sessions: Session 1 (Reds) 10.00am to 1.00pm Session 2 (Whites) 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets: Session 1: $55.00 and Session 2:
$38.50. Both Sessions: $77.00 (includes 10% GST of $7.00).
