Dear Friends in Wine & Food

WHAT AM I DRINKING?
New Zealand’s Syrah wines have been turning a lot of heads recently. For the past month, on and off, we have been trialling new food recipes to complement the finalists of the 2010 Competition, in each of the thirteen Style Categories.  A Duck Casserole was one dish that didn’t make it, considered a little too rich for the Pinot Noir Category and also a little too awkward for the Judges to manipulate the on-the-bone meat in the judging wines-for-food phase of the Competition.  However it worked beautifully with a 2006 Villa Maria “Cellar Selection” Gimblett Gravels Hawkes Bay Syrah.   For our Duck Casserole Recipe and for some of the Judges’ comments on the Syrah….  Read on

WHO ARE THESE ANONYMOUS JUDGES?
Who are these anonymous judges that hand out Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals?  It’s true that, for most shows, the consumer has no idea of who adjudged the wine so proudly displaying a gold medal on the retailers display unit or what the individual judges’ personal opinions were.
Result?  If the consumer does not like the wine, but it has been awarded its gold medal presumably by experts, there must be something wrong with the consumer’s palate.
Of course, the reality is that there is hardly ever one single opinion, even amongst a panel of experts judges, about a given wine.  As leading wine columnist and senior wine judge Huon Hooke once said, each person’s palate is as unique as their fingerprint.   Read on
