Adam (Chuck) Hayward (USA)
Late last year (1999), Chuck was head-hunted from his long held position as Managing Wine Buyer for The Jug Shop, San Francisco’s largest independent wine and spirits retailer.
He is now Wine Buyer – Australia & New Zealand Fine Wine Specialist - for www.jjbuckley.com. JJ Buckley, an on-line wine retailer based in Oakland, California, with its genesis in a small apartment in Berkeley in 1999, is now the 35th fastest growing private company in North America and No 1 in the San Francisco Bay area, according to Inc 500 Magazine.
Chuck received his college degree in political science from Claremont Men's College, Southern California. He later moved to Louisiana for further studies at Louisiana State University. Chuck moved back to California in 1986 to pursue his passion for wine after part time jobs as librarian, cook, political consultant, government bureaucrat, disc jockey and music promoter.
Twenty three years of job stability ensued from that day he walked into a legendary San Francisco wine retailer one Christmas morning and was hired as a temporary holiday help. After 23 years at the Jug Shop, Chuck is one of the leading experts in North America on the wines of Australia and New Zealand. To further his knowledge and understanding, Chuck has visited Australia and New Zealand wine country more than twenty times, usually at his own expense.
Because of his expertise in this area, Chuck is frequently requested to conduct seminars both for consumers and the trade on the wines from this rapidly growing segment of the American wine scene, offering his unique perspective on the wines, history and culture of the two countries. His opinions are sought by prominent wine writers including Harvey Steiman, Dan Berger and Bob Campbell (all three former Judges at the Sydney International) and wine publications, such as Wine Spectator, Food and Wine, San Francisco Business Magazine, Decanter and GO Magazine.
Chuck is also in demand as a wine judge. As work and time permits, he judges at wine shows and on many tasting panels for magazines and the like, mainly in the San Francisco Bay area. This was his first appearance on the Sydney International’s Jury.
