Judges' Comments

Warren Gibson
Some leafy notes. Attractive. Lovely Cabernet expression on the palate. Savoury but still with fruit sweetness. Lovely savoury complexities with the beef. Tannins in balance.

Meg Brodtmann
Initially the wine has lifted aromas of fennel, blackberry, charcoal and a hint of cedar. Ripe Cabernet flavours of blackberry, dark plum, dark chocolate are supported by clove and fresh licorice oak. The tannins are firm but there is plenty of fruit to support them. Less successful pairing with the wine appearing drier and simpler with the food.

Dr Ken Dobler
Deep red colour. Attractive cedar, tobacco leaf and black currant aromas on the nose. Palate shows lovely primary fruit and ripe tannins which give great complexity and length and sit really well with food.

Brent Marris
Light elegant nose. Subtle stalkiness. Hints of cane tannins and acid on the finish. Ripe but not concentrated. Short on the palate. Finishes with drying tannins. Wine is better with the dish but still tannic and lacking fruit.

Ying Tan
Deep dark red. Blackcurrant, green capsicum, fairly restrained initial nose with more pencil shaving coming forward after a few seconds. Med-full, dry, very tannic, blackcurrant pencil shavings, core of red fruit but is it enough for the very dry firm tannins? Lean finish. Beef Cheek brings out fruit and savoury notes.

Sue Bastian
Very deep ruby red with some slight brown tints. Mod to high intensity dark fruits, dusty dried flowers and herbs. Quite a complex nose. Lovely dark fruits and firm suedey and mouth-coating tannin. Moderate length. This is a lovely match.
