Judges' Comments

Warren Gibson
Spicy and attractive. Lifted and pure. A little closed on the palate. Dense and dark with some fresh acidity. Good balance with dish

Meg Brodtmann
Lots of savoury and meaty aromas with a hint of reduction. Big, bold and extracted on the palate with firm tannins. The wine is lacking in fruit to support the huge, chewy tannins. Well matched. The steak is the perfect foil for the chewy tannins.

Dr Ken Dobler
Dark crimson colour. Intense mulberry and stewed plum aromas. Those lovely primary fruit notes on the palate are complexed with pepper and spice and oak influences which area great match with food.

Brent Marris
Big black pepper nose with lovely cinnamon type flavours on the palate. Hints of savoury notes and firm tannins on the finish. Slight gamey notes come through on the finish. A great match with the steak as the gamey notes are lifted.

Ying Tan
Deep dark red. Smoky, earthy crushed red berries on nose. Med-full, dry, tannic dark fruit, moderately concentrated on mid-palate, slightly creamy oak. Dry, spicy slightly lean finish. Sirloin emphasizes Syrah character, softens tannins.

Sue Bastian
Deep ruby. Moderately intense dark berries, plum and hints of menthol. Medium to full bodied with dark fruits, coffee and spiced nuts. Intense tannin with some dark fruit. Long tannin drive. This wine is quite delicate and is slightly dominated by this dish.
