Kym Milne MW.
Chairman of Judges.

Kym’s first degree was in Applied Science (Oenology), graduating from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1980. He first made a name for himself in New Zealand where, over a nine year period from 1983-92, the last seven as Chief Winemaker, he was involved with the restructuring of the Villa Maria Group, well known to this Competition as a highly successful entrant.

In 1991 Kym enrolled in the exacting British “Institute of Masters of Wine” examinations and is one of a very few examinees to pass all phases of the exams at his first attempt.

He spent the latter part of 1992 as a freelance contract winemaker in Hungary and France before joining UK based International Wine Services in 1993, where he was soon appointed Director of Wine making Operations, managing wine making projects in a dozen or more countries around the world.

After 19 years living abroad, Kym and his family returned to Australia in early 2003. He now conducts his own winemaking consultancy, Global Wine Solutions, from a base in the Adelaide Hills, consulting to wineries both in Australia and abroad.

In 2013 Kym was listed in the Top 10 Most Influential Winemaking Consultants Worldwide by The Drinks Business Magazine (UK).

Australian born International Winemaking Consultant Kym Milne MW, for the twelfth year, was our Chairman of Judges. Kym first judged with the Competition’s Panel in 1997 when he was based in the UK.

Most recently, Kym was presented with the “Australian Winemaker of the Year” Award by Winestate Magazine in both 2014 & 2015 based on the performance of Bird in Hand Wines (where Kym has the role of Chief Winemaker) at Winestate Magazine tastings throughout the year.
